Success Story
Khoudir MEZOUAR
Lecturer/Researcher / Director of Degree Programs and Continuing Education
Allow me to share with you the career that led me to where I am today. My name is Khoudir Mezouar, and my academic path has been marked by a deep passion for Marine Sciences and Coastal Development.
It all began in 1998, when I graduated from high school. Fascinated by the mysteries and challenges of marine and coastal environments, I embarked on an intense academic career. In 2001, I earned my DEUA (Degree of Advanced University Studies) in Marine Sciences, and then in 2004, I obtained my engineering degree in Marine Sciences with a specialization in Coastal Development.
But my desire to explore the intricacies of coastal engineering and coastal protection in greater depth led me to pursue further studies. In 2009, I had the immense privilege of completing a doctorate at the Bucharest University of Construction Technology (UTCB) in Romania. My dissertation, focused on coastal engineering and more specifically on a comparative study of coastal protection methods in Algeria and Romania, represented a true academic achievement.
Since then, my commitment to teaching and research has steadily grown. Since 2010, I have been involved as a lecturer and researcher, passionately sharing my knowledge and experience with bright minds eager to explore the complexities of coastal engineering. In 2016, I obtained my Habilitation, a significant milestone that solidified my authority in my field.
Concurrently, I have had the privilege of assuming responsibilities at ENSSMAL. In 2015, I was appointed Head of the Environment and Planning Department. Subsequently, in 2016, I was honored to become Director of Undergraduate Studies and Continuing Education, an opportunity that allowed me to make a significant contribution to the development of academic programs.
Finally, in 2021, I had the privilege and recognition of being promoted to the rank of Professor, a culmination of my unwavering commitment to academic excellence and cutting-edge research.
My career is proof that perseverance, passion, and dedication can open unexpected doors. I strongly encourage you to follow your aspirations, nurture your curiosity, and embrace every opportunity that comes your way. The world of Coastal Engineering is a dynamic and promising field, and your determination can lead you to limitless horizons

SENIOR HSE ENGINEER MANAGER
SENIOR HSE ENGINEER MANAGER Aspilam Internationale Obtaining a degree in Marine Sciences Engineering – specializing in “Coastal Development” – with a thesis on the coastal protection works at Ain Taya (Algiers). This training provided me with a very clear vision of the field in which I wanted to work: indeed, the learning I experienced during my thesis year was crucial and, above all, shaped me for my career in Engineering. My experiences during the five years of training allowed me to strengthen my knowledge in a field where I hadn't anticipated such a career path. The environment, and especially environmental quality and safety indicators, represents a challenge that I finally met by undertaking a very important and highly qualifying NEBOSH training course and obtaining, after examination, the NEBOSH Certificate (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) introduction to incident investigations – Master long certificate N°00738597/1380302 – issued on September 28, 2023. Abdelalim DAHMANI
Lecturer-Researcher / Head of the Preparatory Training Department
Coming from a family with a background in education, I didn't inherit a career in the maritime field, and I never imagined that anything would one day lead me to say I would have a brilliant career in marine science. It all started with choosing our prestigious school. I found it difficult to adapt to the pace of the curriculum for the first two years (due to the language and the system), but I quickly caught up in my specialization. It's worth noting that choosing my specialization didn't worry me at all, as I was pleasantly fascinated by coastal development and coastal engineering. After obtaining my engineering degree, I couldn't imagine leaving this field, and so I immediately decided to join a doctoral program offered by our school to specialize in coastal engineering. My story could not have been so inspiring without the very positive contribution of my five years working at the Directorate of Public Works of the Province of Algiers, which allowed me to develop both technically and practically. My story continued brilliantly after obtaining a Master's degree and enrolling in a doctoral program, notably after joining my school as a lecturer-researcher for over four years. Furthermore, my unconditional love for my school led me to take on the responsibility of the preparatory training department, in order to support new students. Finally, I hope that my story will captivate you as much as it has captivated me.
Meriem Gasmi
Head of Cultural and Sporting Activities Department.
My name is Meriem Gasmi. I am a graduate of the National Higher School of Marine Sciences and Coastal Development (formerly ISMAL), a field I explored during my five years of academic studies, particularly during my three years specializing in marine environments. It all began with a childhood dream: to pursue a career in research. After obtaining my Baccalaureate, I followed my calling and chose this path, ensuring a high-quality, diverse, and enriching education that encompassed both scientific and technical aspects.
The skills I acquired were diverse, ranging from a basic understanding of the current situation to environmental impact assessments and marine environmental protection. I am very happy with the results of my efforts, as my final thesis, which focused on the implementation of environmental monitoring networks, opened the door to the professional world. I was fortunate to have always believed in my calling and was recruited by an agency directly related to my studies, within the Urban Agency for the Promotion and Protection of the Coastline of the province of Algiers (APPL).
Indeed, I held the position of municipal engineer within this agency, and it was only after years of training (scuba diving and other disciplines) and the development of my knowledge that I was subsequently able to manage environmental monitoring networks in the marine environment. And now, I am thrilled to find myself once again recruited by my alma mater, where I secured the teaching position of Doctoral Student in Marine Bioresources by passing the competitive exam. And I continue to dream wholeheartedly… until I proudly achieve my goals
