The National Higher School of Marine Science and Coastal Development (ENSSMAL) is a training and research institution specializing in oceanography and coastal development and management.
Located in the vibrant academic setting of Dely Brahim, ENSSMAL is part of a major university hub that includes the University of Algiers, the Continuing Education University, student residences, and other academic facilities.
ENSSMAL is a dynamic and forward-looking institution that offers both academic and technical training. It provides multidisciplinary programs at various levels, including undergraduate engineering degrees, master's, and doctoral studies.
The School's achievements are rooted in the quality of its staff, its educational and research programs, its strong ties to the national socio-economic sector, and its international partnerships. These assets give ENSSMAL a global outlook and ensure a high level of excellence in its fields of expertise.
ENSSMAL’s strategic goals reflect a broad vision for the development and application of marine sciences in the Algerian context. Its main objectives, both scientific and practical, are:
- To train high-level professionals and researchers for the management of marine resources and the sustainable development of coastal areas.
- To provide continuing education and capacity building for professionals working in relevant sectors.
- To contribute to national socio-economic development by generating scientific data that support the assessment, sustainable exploitation of marine resources, and efficient coastal management.
- To revitalize oceanographic research by strengthening national, regional, and international institutional cooperation.
- To promote the dissemination and application of scientific research results and technical knowledge.
ENSSMAL (formerly ISMAL) was established by Executive Decree No. 08-221 of July 14, 2008, marking the culmination of a long-standing effort to structure oceanographic research and training in Algeria.
